ESPN’s Mark Schlereth almost broke down in tears during Ray Rice discussion

Fighting back tears, ESPN’s Mark Schlereth criticized the NFL’s handling of the Ray Rice case and said the league let down “every fan in America who loves this game.”

Schlereth, the former Super Bowl winner with the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos, spoke as both a retired veteran of the league and a father of two daughters and a granddaughter. He said he was shocked by the TMZ tape and hadn’t processed how brutally violent such an act would be until he saw it with his own eyes.

There had been some discussion on Monday that people shouldn’t have been surprised by the TMZ video. Since the original video of Rice dragging Palmer out of the elevator clearly had been the end result of a violent, unseen act, we shouldn’t have needed a video to fill in the gaps.
